The best time to visit Los Angeles is March to May or October. Temperatures are comfortable, the marine layer clears by midday most days, and you avoid the peak summer crowds at the most-visited neighbourhoods and beaches. LA is a year-round city, but spring and autumn give you the full outdoor experience without the summer pressure.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

  • January to February: Mild (around 18-21C) and the city is quieter. Award season (Golden Globes, Oscars) creates brief spikes in hotel demand in late February and early March. Rain is more likely in January than any other month.
  • March to May: Spring brings warm, clear days (22-26C). The beach areas come alive, the hikes in Griffith Park and the Santa Monica Mountains are excellent, and the city is operating at close to full speed without the summer intensity.
  • June: "June Gloom" is real: the marine layer from the Pacific sits over the coast and inland areas for much of the month, with the sky clearing only in the afternoon. Temperatures are comfortable but the overcast mornings can be disappointing.
  • July to August: Peak summer. Temperatures reach 30-33C in the valleys, the beaches at Santa Monica and Venice are at maximum capacity, and traffic on the 10 and Pacific Coast Highway is at its worst. Disneyland and Universal Studios operate at maximum visitor numbers.
  • September: Still warm (27-30C) and the marine layer retreats. One of the better months, though summer visitors are still present.
  • October: Excellent. Temperatures around 24-27C, clear skies, and the summer crowds have thinned. The Santa Ana winds can push temperatures higher occasionally.
  • November to December: Mild and pleasant (18-23C). The pre-Christmas period sees hotel prices rise but the weather is good. LA handles a festive atmosphere with palm trees, which is either charming or disorienting depending on your expectations.

Peak Season

July and August bring the highest visitor numbers, particularly at beach areas, Disneyland, and the Hollywood tourist corridor. Traffic is its worst in summer. Memorial Day (May) and Labor Day (September) weekends also create significant price spikes.

Shoulder Season

March to May and October are the practical sweet spots. Spring combines good weather with manageable crowds. October avoids the June Gloom of early summer and the heat of August, and the city has a post-summer ease to it that makes it particularly pleasant.

What to Avoid

June Gloom if you want beach days: the marine layer means overcast skies until noon or later across coastal areas, which can make Santa Monica and Venice feel underwhelming. Also, LA traffic in August is severe; if driving is part of the plan, keep an eye on the time.
