The best time to visit Las Vegas is March to May or October to November. Temperatures are comfortable, the desert air is clear, and you avoid both the brutal summer heat and the mid-winter convention surges. Las Vegas is a year-round destination and the casinos never close, but the outdoor experience varies enormously across the seasons.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

  • January to February: Cool (around 10-15C in the day, dropping to 3-6C at night). Convention season drives hotel prices up in January, particularly around CES in early January. Otherwise, quiet and cheap.
  • March to April: Spring brings ideal temperatures (18-25C). March Madness draws sports bettors. Spring Break in March adds a younger crowd. Generally a good window.
  • May: Warm (around 30-32C) and drying out. Before the peak heat of summer. A solid choice.
  • June to August: The heat is extreme: July averages 41C in the day, with nights staying above 28C. The Strip and outdoor areas are punishing. Pool culture takes over. Flights and hotels can be cheaper due to the heat putting off some visitors, but the experience changes fundamentally.
  • September: Still hot (around 36C) but easing. Labor Day weekend in early September spikes hotel prices dramatically.
  • October: The strongest month. Temperatures around 24-28C, perfect for the Strip, the Fremont Experience, and day trips to the Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam. Halloween weekend pushes prices up.
  • November: Excellent. Temperatures around 18-22C, lower crowds, and some of the best hotel rates outside of convention spikes.
  • December: Cooler (10-15C days). The Christmas and New Year period drives significant price spikes and very high visitor numbers for 26-31 December.

Peak Season

New Year's Eve is Las Vegas's single most expensive night, with hotel rates multiplying several times over. Convention seasons (January, February, April, November) create demand spikes even though visitor numbers are not tourist-focused. Summer is crowded despite the heat, mainly because flights are cheap and the indoor, air-conditioned nature of the casinos makes it viable.

Shoulder Season

October and November are the practical best. Temperatures make outdoor Las Vegas enjoyable, prices are lower than the convention months, and the city has a relaxed energy. March and April offer a similar quality window in spring.

What to Avoid

July in the outdoor sun for any extended period. The Nevada desert in July is genuinely dangerous heat: 41C plus with little shade on the Strip. Fine if you are indoors, but sightseeing outside needs to happen very early morning or after 6pm.
