The best time to visit Brussels is May or September. The weather cooperates, the city is active without being overwhelmed, and you avoid the worst of summer's EU conference season. July and August work fine as a backup. Winter has its charm but the weather is genuinely grey.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

  • January to February: Cold, wet, and very quiet. Hotels are cheap and museums are calm. Not unpleasant if you dress for it, but the city feels subdued.
  • March to April: Temperatures rise toward 12-15C. Spring markets and the Brussels Jazz Weekend start drawing visitors. Easter can cause a brief price spike.
  • May: One of the best months. Around 17-19C, plenty of sunshine, and the Grand Place looks excellent. The Flower Carpet event happens in even-numbered years in August, but May's bloom season adds colour across the city.
  • June: Warm and lively. EU Parliament activity peaks, which fills business hotels mid-week but rarely affects tourist areas much.
  • July to August: Peak summer. Warm (22-25C on good days), with strong visitor numbers. The Grand Place and Manneken Pis queue up. Brussels is less intense than Paris or Amsterdam at peak, but still noticeably busier.
  • September: Crowd levels drop, temperatures hold around 18-20C early in the month. A strong shoulder option.
  • October: Autumnal and quieter. Comfortable for walking the Ixelles and Saint-Gilles neighbourhoods. Rain increases.
  • November to December: Brussels Christmas Market is one of Europe's better ones, running through the Grand Place and Place Sainte-Catherine. Cold, atmospheric, and genuinely worth it.

Peak Season

July and August see the highest leisure visitor numbers, though Brussels never hits the tourist intensity of Amsterdam or Prague. Accommodation prices rise but remain reasonable compared to other western European capitals. The main museums and the Atomium are busiest on weekends.

Shoulder Season

May and September are the practical sweet spots. Both offer pleasant weather, manageable crowds, and prices below the summer peak. May gets the edge for overall experience, with longer evenings and a city in full spring mode.

What to Avoid

February is the low point: cold, grey, and the streets around the EU quarter can feel quiet to the point of emptiness. If you want Brussels at its most characterful, pick any month from April to October over the depths of winter.
