Porto in October is an excellent city break and one of the better-value ones in Europe. The Douro Valley harvest finishes in October, the summer visitors leave, and the city, which is compact and beautiful and full of excellent wine and food, runs at its own unhurried pace. Porto in October feels closer to how it actually is rather than how it performs for tourists, and that's a considerable upgrade.

Weather

Early October is warm at around 19-22°C, making outdoor exploration comfortable. Late October cools to 14-17°C and rain increases, Porto gets genuinely wet in autumn, but the city's covered market spaces, wine cellars, and cafe culture provide plenty of dry alternatives. The Douro River and the bridges look excellent in low autumn light. Pack a light waterproof for the second half of the month.

Crowds and Prices

Noticeably quieter than summer. Porto has grown enormously in tourist popularity and summer can feel crowded, particularly along the Ribeira waterfront and in Vila Nova de Gaia's port wine lodges. October brings the city back to manageable levels. Hotel prices are lower, the famous tile-covered churches are easier to appreciate, and the Livraria Lello (one of the world's most beautiful bookshops) has shorter queues.

What's On

The Douro Valley wine harvest concludes in October, with some lodges running harvest experiences and tastings. The Sao Joao Festival is a summer event, but Porto's cultural calendar stays active in autumn. The Serralves Foundation runs strong contemporary art programming year-round. October is the last comfortable month for boat trips on the Douro River before winter weather makes them less appealing.

One Thing to Watch

October rain in Porto can be heavy, particularly in the last week of the month. This is Atlantic coast autumn and it's more intense than, say, Lisbon or Barcelona. The Ribeira area's cobbled streets become slippery when wet. Carry a proper waterproof rather than a light rain jacket. The city functions perfectly well in the rain, and the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia are one of the better wet-day activities on the continent.
