Porto in November is excellent. The city is small enough that low season genuinely transforms the experience: the streets of the Ribeira district feel lived-in rather than staged, prices for accommodation are some of the best in Western Europe, and the port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia operate at a relaxed, unhurried pace. November rain notwithstanding, this is one of our recommended months to visit Portugal.
Weather
Expect temperatures between 9°C and 15°C, with November being Porto's wettest month. Atlantic fronts push rain through the city regularly, often in bursts followed by clearing. The azulejo-tiled facades of Porto look particularly vivid in the rain. Pack a proper waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes. On the days when the weather clears, the light across the Douro and the Dom Luis Bridge is genuinely beautiful.
Crowds and Prices
Deep low season. Ryanair fares from UK regional airports are frequently available for under 30 euros return. Hotels in the Baixa and Miragaia neighbourhoods are excellent value. The Livraria Lello bookshop, one of Porto's most visited sights, is more manageable in November than at any other time, though it still requires timed entry. The port wine tastings in Vila Nova de Gaia are leisurely and unhurried.
What's On
November 1 (All Saints' Day) is a public holiday in Portugal. The wider cultural calendar runs normally. Sao Joao, Porto's biggest festival, is a June event, so November is quiet on the events front. What November offers instead is the city's everyday rhythm: pastel de nata with coffee in a neighbourhood pastelaria, an evening of caldo verde and bacalhau, and the fado that drifts out of bars in the Fontainhas district.
One Thing to Watch
The Douro river can rise significantly in heavy November rain. The lower riverside area of the Ribeira is generally fine, but it's worth noting for context. More practically: Porto's famous steep hills and cobbled steps become seriously slippery in the rain. Appropriate footwear is not optional.
