June is an excellent time to visit Porto. The weather is warm and sunny, the city is beautiful in summer light, and it contains one of the best street parties in Europe. The Festa de Sao Joao on the night of 23-24 June is reason enough to plan a trip specifically around this month.

Weather

Temperatures reach 23-27°C through June, with the Atlantic keeping things more comfortable than inland Iberia. Mornings are fresh and ideal for exploring the Ribeira waterfront and climbing to the viewpoints. Evenings are warm and Porto's outdoor terrace culture is in full swing. Pack light summer clothes and comfortable shoes for the city's steep hills. A light layer for coastal evenings is worth having.

Crowds and Prices

Porto's popularity has grown enormously and June brings significant tourist numbers. The Ribeira, the Livraria Lello bookshop, and the Dom Luis I bridge are all busy. The bookshop requires advance ticket purchase (the ticket price comes off a book purchase inside). Book accommodation several weeks ahead, particularly for the Festa de Sao Joao period when rooms fill up fast.

What's On

The Festa de Sao Joao (St John's Festival) on the night of 23-24 June is Porto's biggest event. The entire city takes to the streets, everyone gets plastic hammers to tap each other on the head (a local tradition), there are fireworks over the Douro, sardines being grilled on every corner, and a genuinely extraordinary party atmosphere. Plan your Porto trip around this date if at all possible.

One Thing to Watch

The Livraria Lello, the famous bookshop that inspired Harry Potter's Diagon Alley, requires an entry ticket purchased in advance online. Don't just turn up. The queue without a ticket is long and gets you nowhere. Also, while the bookshop is beautiful, it's small and very busy: if browsing in peace is the goal, go at opening time or late afternoon on a weekday.
