Porto in February is a city that gives itself to you more readily than in summer. The Douro riverside, the Ribeira waterfront, and the wine caves of Vila Nova de Gaia are all accessible without the crowds that make them busy from May onwards. Prices are at their annual low. Porto is also genuinely handsome in rain, which is fortunate because February is one of its wetter months. If you are going for the port wine, the azulejo tiles, and the francesinha sandwiches, February delivers all of them.

Weather

February averages 8C to 14C. Rain is frequent and can be heavy, particularly from Atlantic systems coming off the coast. A waterproof coat and comfortable rain-resistant footwear are essential. The city is hilly and the cobbled streets are slippery when wet. In between rain, the light on the Douro and the city's tiled facades is exceptional.

Crowds and Prices

Very low season. The Livraria Lello bookshop, which at peak season requires timed entry and long queues, is far more accessible. The port wine caves in Vila Nova de Gaia are walkable without booking. Flights from UK airports are cheap. Hotel prices in the Baixa, Ribeira, and Foz neighbourhoods are among the year's lowest.

What's On

Carnival runs in Porto in the pre-Lenten period, with events across the city. Valentine's Day is observed but does not create the same price spike as more 'romantic' branded European cities. The port wine caves run tours year-round, and February is one of the best times to visit without queuing. The city's live music venues, particularly in the Bonfim and Cedofeita neighbourhoods, run good programmes through winter.

One Thing to Watch

Porto's cobbled hills are genuinely slippery when wet. The streets around the Ribeira and up towards the Se Cathedral are steep and smooth-soled shoes on wet cobblestones are a genuine hazard. This sounds like an obvious thing to note and it is, but the casualty list from Porto's hills in winter is enough to warrant specific mention. Wear shoes with grip and take the tuk-tuks or the cable car when the hills are wet.
