Krakow's public transport network (MPK — Miejskie Przedsiebiorstwo Komunikacyjne) runs trams and buses throughout the city and into the outer districts. For most visitors the Old Town is walkable, but trams are the right way to reach Kazimierz, Nowa Huta, or Podgorze without a taxi. The system is cheap, reasonably reliable, and not difficult to use once you understand the ticket structure.

Ticket Types

Tickets are timed, not per-journey. The main options:

20-minute ticket: approximately 3 PLN. Covers a single short journey — useful for crossing the city centre. Not valid if you need to change.

60-minute ticket: approximately 5 PLN. The practical option for most journeys. Valid for all transfers within the hour.

24-hour pass: approximately 17 PLN. The right choice if you're doing multiple trips in a day — Kazimierz in the morning, Nowa Huta in the afternoon, back to the Old Town.

48-hour and 72-hour passes are available for longer stays.

Tickets are bought at machines at major tram stops, newsagents (kiosks), or via the Jakdojade app, which handles journey planning and ticket purchase in one place. The app is genuinely useful and works well in English.

Validation

Validate your ticket immediately on boarding using the yellow machines inside trams and buses. Inspectors check regularly. Fines for unvalidated tickets are 150–250 PLN — not worth the risk on a 5 PLN ticket. Contactless card payment is accepted on some newer vehicles, but do not assume this applies to the vehicle you're on.

Trams for Visitors

Tram lines 3, 19, and 24 connect the Old Town area with Kazimierz. The tram network runs east-west across the city efficiently. Line 4 goes to Nowa Huta from the centre, taking about 25 minutes.

Night Transport

Night bus services run from around midnight to 5 AM on a reduced network. Check Jakdojade for routing — the night lines have different numbers and don't replicate the daytime routes exactly.

Walking vs. Transport

The Old Town and Kazimierz are walkable from each other in about 20 minutes. If you're staying centrally and only visiting the main sights, you may not need public transport at all. The trams earn their keep for Nowa Huta, Podgorze (Schindler's Factory), and the outer suburbs.
