Krakow is one of the most affordable city break destinations in Europe. Budget accommodation is genuinely plentiful and the gap between a cheap bed and a reasonable one is smaller here than in most Western European capitals. The hostels are good, the guesthouses are often better value than hotels, and the price differential between the Old Town and Kazimierz is rarely large enough to drive a decision by itself.

What Budget Means in Krakow

Hostel dorm beds: 60–90 PLN per night. Private hostel rooms: 150–200 PLN. Small guesthouses and pension-style hotels in the Old Town or Kazimierz: 200–350 PLN for a double. These are low figures by Western European standards and reflect the genuine cost of staying in Krakow, not the budget-scraping end of the market.

For context: 300 PLN is approximately £60 or €70. A private room in that range in the Old Town is a different proposition than the same price in London or Paris.

Hostels Worth Knowing

Greg & Tom Beer House Hostel (ul. Pawia, near the main station): one of Krakow's longest-established and most consistently reviewed hostels. Social atmosphere, clean facilities, free beer on arrival. Good for solo travellers.

Hostel Flamingo (Old Town): central location, mixed dorms and private rooms, reliable reviews. The Old Town location makes it slightly pricier than the equivalent in Kazimierz but the proximity is worth it if you're on a short break.

Good Bye Lenin Hostel (Kazimierz): in the heart of Kazimierz, smaller, character-filled. Better for visitors who want to be near the restaurants and bars rather than the sights.

Guesthouses and Small Hotels

Krakow has a large stock of small guesthouses, aparthotels, and family-run hotels that sit between hostels and full-service hotels in price. Search on Booking.com filtering by "guesthouse" or "bed and breakfast" in Kazimierz or the Old Town — the range is wide and the reviews are generally reliable.

Apartments (via Booking.com or Airbnb) are a particularly good option for groups of two to four. A two-bedroom apartment in Kazimierz for 400–600 PLN per night splits well and often comes with a kitchen.

What to Avoid

Stag party-oriented accommodation in the Old Town. Krakow has a substantial stag weekend economy and some hostels cater specifically to this. They're identifiable by their marketing and by their reviews. Avoid if you want to sleep.
