Two days in Tallinn is enough and arguably slightly more than you need for the Old Town alone. It's one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe, but it's also small enough to cover in a day. The second day is for the creative Telliskivi district, the maritime neighbourhood of Kalamaja, and the slowdown time the city actually rewards.
What You Can Cover in 2 Days
Two days in Tallinn:
- The Old Town. The UNESCO-listed medieval core with Town Hall Square, the Toompea Castle hill, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the panoramic viewpoints over the lower town. Allow a full morning.
- St Olaf's Church tower climb. The church tower is open to visitors and gives the best views over the old city. It's worth the steep climb.
- Telliskivi Creative City. The former factory complex turned creative district with markets, independent restaurants, and design shops. The Saturday flea market here is excellent.
- Kalamaja and Noblessner. The wooden house neighbourhood and the renovated submarine harbour have a completely different character from the medieval centre. An afternoon and evening in Kalamaja is the more authentic Tallinn experience.
What You'll Miss
Two days in Tallinn:
- A day trip to Helsinki. The ferry to Helsinki takes two hours and is one of the easiest international day trips in Europe. It requires giving up a Tallinn day, which at two days is a significant trade.
- Lahemaa National Park. The Estonian countryside an hour east of Tallinn has manors, bogs, and forest. It's a good day trip but doesn't fit a short city visit.
How to Make the Most of It
- Do the Old Town in the morning of day one. It gets busier as the day goes on. Early morning in the lower town is the visit at its best.
- Spend the evening in Telliskivi or Kalamaja. The bars and restaurants in these neighbourhoods are where Tallinn's younger, local population actually spends time.
- Walk rather than taxi. Tallinn's Old Town and creative districts are all within twenty minutes on foot of each other.
- Try elk or wild boar at a traditional Estonian restaurant. The food in Tallinn has improved significantly in recent years and a meal in the Old Town or Kalamaja is worth sitting down for.
The Honest Verdict
Two days in Tallinn covers the medieval city and gives you the contemporary districts that show the other side of the city. It's a compact, affordable, and underrated European capital that rewards a focused short visit.
