Is 2 Days in Munich Enough? Honest Answer

Two days in Munich is tight but a real visit. The city's major sights cluster around the centre and the English Garden, and two days lets you cover them without feeling rushed. What you miss is the day trips and the museum depth.

Two days in Munich:

Marienplatz and the historic centre. The central square, the Neues Rathaus (with the Glockenspiel at 11am and noon), the Viktualienmarkt food market, and the old town around them. A full morning.
The Deutsches Museum. The largest science and technology museum in the world, on an island in the Isar River. It's enormous; three hours is enough for a focused visit. Book in advance.
The English Garden. One of the largest urban parks in the world, with the Chinese Tower beer garden and the indoor surfing wave on the Eisbach. The surfing wave at the Eisbach is a genuine Munich original.
Schwabing and Maxvorstadt. The university neighbourhood north of the city centre with the Pinakothek museum complex and the most interesting bars and restaurants in Munich.

What You'll Miss

Two days in Munich:

Neuschwanstein Castle. The famous fairy-tale castle is two hours from Munich by train and bus. It needs a full day and is incompatible with a two-day city visit unless you use one day entirely for the excursion.
The Pinakothek museum complex. Three excellent art museums within five minutes of each other: the Alte Pinakothek (Old Masters), Neue Pinakothek, and Pinakothek der Moderne. Each needs two hours. The Deutsches Museum typically wins on two-day visits.
Dachau. The concentration camp memorial is thirty minutes from Munich by S-Bahn. It's an important and sobering visit but needs a half-day, which is difficult to fit into two days that also include the city sights.

How to Make the Most of It

Visit the Viktualienmarkt early. The food market opens at 6am and is best before the lunch crowds. It's one of the most enjoyable food experiences in Munich.
Book the Deutsches Museum in advance. Queues without a ticket can be significant.
Drink beer in the English Garden. The Chinesischer Turm beer garden is the most atmospheric in the city. Take snacks from the Viktualienmarkt and spend an afternoon there.
Don't try to do Neuschwanstein on a two-day Munich visit. It always sounds achievable and never is without cutting something significant.
