Florence in October is one of the best cities in Europe in one of the best months in the calendar. The summer heat and crowds ease, the Uffizi becomes manageable, and Tuscany's harvest season kicks in with wine and olive oil festivals across the region. The city's art, architecture, and food scene operate at full capacity, and you can actually experience them without fighting through coach tour groups at every turn.

Weather

Genuinely pleasant. Early October sits around 19-22°C, which is warm enough to sit outside and explore without discomfort. Late October cools to 14-17°C and occasional rain arrives, but Florence in October rarely becomes unpleasant. The Tuscan light in autumn is warm and soft, which is exactly what Renaissance painting deis a backdrop. Pack light layers for evenings but leave the heavy coat at home unless you're going into late October.

Crowds and Prices

Noticeably quieter than summer. The Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia (Michelangelo's David) are still popular and still require booking, but the crush is far more manageable. The Duomo complex is better too. Hotels drop in price significantly compared to June, July, and August. Florence has excellent mid-range accommodation and October makes it accessible at reasonable rates.

What's On

Tuscany's harvest season dominates October. Olive oil production begins, wine harvest festivals run across the region, and day trips to Chianti or Montalcino put you right in the middle of it. Florence's Oltrarno neighbourhood comes into its own in autumn when the artisan workshops open up their Porte Aperte (open door) events. The city's cultural calendar includes regular chamber music and opera at the Teatro della Pergola.

One Thing to Watch

October is truffle season in Tuscany and Umbria, which means Florentine restaurants go all-in on truffle menus. This is not a warning, it's an instruction. If you like truffles, October in Florence is the time to eat them. Book at least one restaurant that does this well: it's a genuinely seasonal experience that justifies timing your trip around it.
