Florence in February is the version of Florence the city prefers. The Uffizi has room to breathe, the Duomo queue is manageable, and the streets around Santa Croce and Oltrarno are populated by residents rather than tour groups. February is the correct time to visit if art is the reason you are going. The trade-off is genuine cold, particularly in the mornings, and occasional rain. Valentine's weekend brings a noticeable crowd of Italian couples to the city, which nudges hotel prices up slightly but adds a pleasantly festive atmosphere to the restaurants.
Weather
February averages 3C to 11C. Rain falls regularly, though not all day. The city sits in a valley and can trap mist and fog in the mornings, which clears to sunshine by mid-morning on better days. A warm coat, waterproof layer, and comfortable walking shoes are all you need. Snow is rare but has been known to dust the rooftops.
Crowds and Prices
Low season. The Uffizi and Accademia (Michelangelo's David) still benefit from advance booking but are far less crowded than summer. Same-week tickets are often available. Hotel prices in the San Giovanni and Oltrarno neighbourhoods are competitive. Valentine's weekend sees prices rise for central properties: book early if your dates fall there.
What's On
Valentine's Day is taken seriously in Florence, with restaurants across the city offering special menus and the general atmosphere leaning into the city's romantic reputation. Carnival events take place in the weeks before Lent, including events in the Piazza della Repubblica. Scoppio del Carro, the famous Easter fireworks ceremony, is not in February, but the winter opera and classical music season is in full swing.
One Thing to Watch
Many of Florence's smaller museums and churches operate reduced winter hours and close one day mid-week, often Monday or Tuesday. If your itinerary includes the Bargello, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, or the smaller Oltrarno chapels, verify hours in advance. The major sites keep standard hours, but the secondary ones occasionally catch visitors out.
