Copenhagen in December: What to Expect

Copenhagen in December is a test of how much you enjoy cold weather, and a reward for passing it. The Danes invented hygge, and December is the month it makes the most sense: warm interiors, candles in every window, good food, and Tivoli Gardens doing its full Christmas transformation. It's not cheap, because Copenhagen never is, but it's one of the most genuinely atmospheric European city breaks you can do in winter.

Weather

Cold, dark, and occasionally snowy. December temperatures in Copenhagen sit around 0°C to 4°C, with short days, around 7 hours of daylight at the solstice, and a mix of frost, rain, and occasional light snow. Dress for Scandinavian winter: proper coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots. The cold here is damp, which makes it feel sharper than the numbers suggest. The upside is that the city looks genuinely beautiful in low winter light, and the Danes are extremely good at making indoor spaces warm and welcoming.

Crowds and Prices

Copenhagen is expensive at any time of year, and December doesn't offer much relief on that front. Tivoli and the Christmas markets draw visitors, and hotel prices stay high relative to other European cities. That said, the major museums, the Nyhavn canal, and the neighbourhoods outside the tourist core are less crowded than in summer. Early December weekdays give you the most breathing room. Christmas week and New Year's Eve bring the predictable surge and price spike.

What's On

Tivoli Gardens transforms for Christmas from mid-November through early January. It's one of the better Christmas theme park experiences in Europe: the old carousel rides, the fairy lights through the gardens, the food stalls, and the general atmosphere of a place that has been doing Christmas well for a very long time. Entry requires a ticket, and popular evenings sell out. The Hans Christian Andersen associations throughout the city also lean into the season. Strøget, the main shopping street, has its Christmas lights running from the first of December. New Year's Eve in Copenhagen is low-key compared to some capitals, with a city hall square gathering and fireworks at midnight.

One Thing to Watch

Tivoli Gardens is the headline December attraction, and weekend evenings in December sell out. Book tickets online before you arrive rather than turning up on the night. The Christmas special evenings with entertainment programmes sell faster than general admission.
