Choosing Your Tallinn Base: Old Town, Kalamaja, or Kadriorg?

You open the hotel search and immediately have a problem: half the results are in "Tallinn City Centre" which could mean anything, and the other half are in the Old Town, which sounds obvious but feels expensive. Where do you actually stay?

The short answer: Old Town if you want atmosphere, Kalamaja if you want local life, Kadriorg if you want quiet. Here's the full picture.

Old Town: Maximum Atmosphere, Maximum Tourism

Staying inside or right beside Tallinn's UNESCO-listed Old Town means waking up to medieval towers, cobblestone streets, and centuries-old architecture outside your window. It's genuinely special — particularly in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive.

The upside:

• Everything is walkable from your door
• The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in Europe
• You'll see the Old Town at its most magical (dawn and dusk) because you're based there
• Most attractions are under 10 minutes' walk

The downside:

• It's the most expensive area to sleep
• Summer evenings bring crowds and noise (some bars stay loud until 01:00)
• Cobblestones and narrow streets mean no car access to your door
• You're surrounded by tourists, not locals

Best for: First-timers, couples on a romantic trip, anyone who wants to step outside and be immediately in the good stuff.

Kalamaja: Tallinn's Coolest Neighbourhood

Kalamaja is a 20-minute walk or one tram stop from Old Town, and it's where Tallinn's creative class lives. Colourful wooden houses, independent coffee shops, design studios, and the Telliskivi Creative City arts complex sit here.

It doesn't have the medieval drama of Old Town, but it has something different: actual Tallinn life. Locals walk dogs past converted industrial buildings. Café windows glow in the afternoon light. There's a farmers' market on weekends.

The upside:

• Lower prices than Old Town (sometimes significantly)
• Quieter, more residential feel
• Excellent café and bar scene
• Quick tram access to Old Town (Tram #2, 10 minutes)
• Balti Jaam Market is nearby — good for breakfast street food

The downside:

• You're not walking out of the door into the Old Town atmosphere
• Some hotels are guesthouses converted from old wooden buildings (charming but variable quality)
• Fewer large hotel chains (mostly independent guesthouses and Airbnbs)

Best for: Return visitors, travellers who find Old Town too touristy, anyone who values neighbourhood feel over convenience.

Kadriorg: Peaceful, Green, and a Little Away from It All

Kadriorg is east of the centre — a residential district built around Peter the Great's baroque summer palace and the sweeping Kadriorg Park. It's the greenest, quietest part of Tallinn.

The KUMU Art Museum is here. The park is beautiful. It's a 25-minute walk or Tram #1/3 ride from Old Town.

The upside:

• Genuinely peaceful — almost no tourist noise
• Beautiful park views
• Great if you're staying more than 3–4 days and want a calm base
• Good local restaurants

The downside:

• Furthest from the main action
• Limited accommodation options (mostly smaller guesthouses)
• You'll be taking trams more often

Best for: Travellers who've done Old Town before, anyone visiting for 5+ days, families who want space and green.

City Centre (Between Old Town and Kalamaja)

The area around Viru Keskus (the main shopping and transport hub) is convenient but characterless. Hotels here are often good value and extremely well-connected, but you're in the middle ground: not Old Town atmosphere, not Kalamaja local feel.

If your priority is convenience and price over neighbourhood character, this is fine. You're a short walk from everything.
