Athens in December: What to Expect

Athens in December is underrated in a way that borders on a travel secret. The Acropolis without summer heat or summer crowds, mild temperatures by European standards, and prices that reflect the fact that most travellers haven't worked this out yet. Early December is the better half of the month. Christmas week picks up, but Athens never really goes frenetic in winter the way Barcelona or Amsterdam do.

Weather

Mild for December, though not warm. Temperatures sit around 12°C to 15°C during the day, dropping to 7°C or 8°C at night. There is some rain, particularly in the first half of the month, but blue-sky days are still common. A light jacket and a layer underneath covers most situations. The light in December is genuinely lovely for photography: golden-hour at the Acropolis lasts a long time and doesn't come with 2,000 other people in the shot.

Crowds and Prices

Flights and hotels are cheap through most of December. The Acropolis queues are a fraction of what they are in summer, and you can walk around the Ancient Agora on a weekday morning in near-solitude. That said, Athens has become more popular as a winter city break, so expect some fellow visitors rather than empty streets. Christmas week sees a moderate rise in visitors and prices, but nothing like the escalation you'd see in Prague or Vienna.

What's On

Athens puts up a Christmas tree on Syntagma Square and lights up the main commercial streets around Ermou. It's tasteful rather than extravagant. The main draw in December is really the city itself: Monastiraki, the Plaka, and the museums become more enjoyable when you're not competing for space with tour groups every five minutes. The National Archaeological Museum, which many visitors skip in favour of the Acropolis, is worth a full morning in December when it's quiet. Greece's public holiday on 25 December closes most sites, so plan around that if your trip straddles Christmas Day.

One Thing to Watch

Some smaller restaurants and tavernas in tourist-facing areas reduce hours or close for a few days around Christmas. The Plaka in particular can feel quieter than expected in the final days of December. It's not a problem, but it's worth having a few backup options rather than turning up to find your first choice shut for the week.
