The Real Risks

Pickpocketing is the main issue, especially on the metro (particularly the line running from the airport to Monastiraki), at Monastiraki flea market, and around Syntagma Square. Bag snatching from motorbikes has been reported, so wear bags on the side away from traffic.

Omonia Square has a rougher edge than the rest of central Athens and attracts drug use and rough sleeping. It's safe enough in daylight but worth avoiding late at night. The blocks immediately north of Omonia toward Metaxourgeio can feel unsettling after dark.

Common tourist scams include overcharging at restaurants near the Acropolis (always check the menu prices before sitting down), fake "closed today" hustles outside major sights, and taxi overcharging from the airport. Licensed taxis use meters; agree on the fare or make sure the meter is running.

Solo Travel and Specific Groups

Athens is generally fine for solo female travelers. The main central areas are busy and well-lit. Street harassment can occur, particularly in bar areas late at night, but it's more annoying than threatening in most cases.
