April is an excellent month to visit Athens. The weather is comfortable, the Acropolis is not yet baking under summer heat, and if Easter falls in April (which it often does on the Orthodox calendar), you get one of the most atmospheric religious celebrations in Europe layered on top of an already good city-break month.

Weather

Temperatures range from around 12C at night to 20C during the day. It feels warm in the sun, cool in the shade. You will not need a heavy coat, but a light layer for evenings is sensible. Rain is possible but not dominant. This is some of the best sightseeing weather Athens gets, before the July and August heat makes the Acropolis genuinely punishing.

Crowds and Prices

April is shoulder season moving toward peak. Early April is manageable. The Acropolis and major museums have queues, but timed tickets are generally available if you book a week or so ahead rather than months. Orthodox Easter brings a significant number of Greek diaspora visitors back to the city, plus international tourists drawn by the celebrations. Prices for central hotels creep up around Easter week, and restaurants around Monastiraki and Plaka fill up.

What's On

Orthodox Easter is the main event when it falls in April. The Saturday midnight Resurrection service (Anastasi) in churches across the city is extraordinary: candles, incense, the church bells, the fireworks. Syntagma Square hosts large gatherings. It is a genuinely moving experience and worth planning around.

The Athens Marathon traditionally runs in November, but smaller spring races and outdoor events populate the city in April. The outdoor cafe culture comes fully back to life as the weather warms, and the National Garden and Zappeion area are lovely for an afternoon walk.

One Thing to Watch

If Easter falls in April, Good Friday sees some businesses closed and transport disrupted in the afternoon and evening. Easter Sunday is a significant family day, which means many local restaurants close or go reservation-only. Book dinner in advance if you are there over the Easter weekend. Also note that Greek and Western Easter do not always coincide, so check the specific year's dates before you travel.
