Athens in a Day: What to Do With 24 Hours

One day in Athens is workable, and you'll leave with a strong sense of the city. The Acropolis alone is worth the visit, and the neighbourhoods around it are easy to explore on foot. The heat in summer is the main variable: if you're visiting between June and August, the order of your day matters more than usual.

Getting In and Out

Athens International Airport is around 40 minutes from the city centre by Metro. It's straightforward and inexpensive. If you're arriving by cruise ship at Piraeus, budget around 30 to 40 minutes into the centre depending on traffic.

Morning

Go to the Acropolis first. Get there when it opens. The site gets busy quickly, and the heat makes a late-morning visit unpleasant in summer. The Parthenon is obviously the centrepiece, but don't rush past the Erechtheion or the views down over the city. Allow two hours for the site itself.

Directly afterwards, visit the Acropolis Museum at the base of the hill. It's one of the best archaeological museums in Europe and pairs perfectly with the site you've just walked. The top floor, with its view back up to the Parthenon, is genuinely impressive.

Afternoon

Lunch in Plaka, the old neighbourhood that sits beneath the Acropolis. It's touristy, yes, but some of the tavernas are excellent and the streets are worth walking regardless. Look for places a street or two back from the main drag.

After lunch, walk through Monastiraki. The flea market area is best on Sundays but has life on weekdays too. Monastiraki Square gives you another angle on the Acropolis and sits next to the Ancient Agora, which is worth a quick visit if you have the time and energy.

If you want a quieter afternoon alternative, the Anafiotika neighbourhood, a tiny enclave of whitewashed houses just below the Acropolis, is one of Athens' most unexpected corners.

Evening (if time allows)

Sunset from Filopappou Hill, just west of the Acropolis, is one of the best free views in the city. It's a short walk from Plaka and less crowded than the Acropolis hill itself.

For dinner, Koukaki has become Athens' most interesting neighbourhood for food: less tourist-facing than Plaka, with proper restaurants and wine bars on streets like Veikou and Drakou.

What to Skip

The National Archaeological Museum is outstanding but large. You'll need three hours to do it properly, which doesn't fit a one-day visit. Save it for a return trip.

Cape Sounion, with the Temple of Poseidon, is a popular day trip but takes the better part of a day. Not for a 24-hour visit.
