May is one of Amsterdam's most enjoyable months. The King's Day chaos of late April has passed, the tulip season is winding down (most fields peak in April), and the city settles into warm, long spring days. Liberation Day on 5 May brings the city out for free concerts and a genuine sense of occasion. Accommodation prices are mid-range before the summer peak.
Weather
May in Amsterdam sees daytime temperatures of 14C to 18C, with mild evenings around 9C. More sunshine than April and less rain. The canal-side terraces are fully occupied and the city is at its most attractive in this light. Pack a light jacket for evenings and layers for the variable North Sea weather, but generally expect more warmth and sun than the month before.
Crowds and Prices
May is shoulder season in the later stage, moving toward summer. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House are all busy and all require advance booking. Hotel prices are noticeably lower than June and July. Liberation Day weekend (around 5 May) is a busy period for domestic Dutch events but does not cause the same accommodation surge as King's Day.
What's On
Liberation Day (5 May) is one of the most significant days in the Dutch calendar, commemorating the end of WWII occupation in 1945. Free concerts take place across the country, with Amsterdam's Museumplein hosting a major event. Remembrance Day on 4 May (the day before) sees the whole country observe a two-minute silence at 8pm. The Keukenhof Gardens are open until late May, though the tulip peak is past; late tulips and other spring bulbs carry the display through the month.
One Thing to Watch
The tulip fields in the Bollenstreek (bulb region, between Haarlem and Leiden) are typically at peak in mid to late April. By May they are being cut or have passed. If tulip fields are a priority, April is the month; if you are in Amsterdam in May, the Keukenhof is still worth visiting but temper expectations for the fields. The city itself, though, is excellent in May.
