Amsterdam in November is cold, grey, and genuinely one of the best times to visit. The summer crowds are gone, prices drop sharply, and the city settles back into its actual rhythm. If you can handle the weather, you'll have the canals, museums, and brown cafes largely to yourself.
Weather
Expect temperatures between 4°C and 10°C, with frequent rain and overcast skies. Wind off the canals makes it feel colder than it is. Pack a waterproof layer, warm mid-layers, and comfortable shoes that don't mind puddles. Daylight runs from around 8am to 4:30pm, so late afternoons get dark fast. None of this is insurmountable if you dress for it.
Crowds and Prices
November is deep low season. Hotels that cost 200 euros a night in July can be had for 80 to 100. Flight prices follow the same pattern. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are far more manageable, though timed entry tickets are still worth booking in advance. You'll notice the absence of tourist coaches almost immediately.
What's On
Museum Night (Museumnacht) falls in early November, when around 50 Amsterdam museums stay open until 2am with special programming, performances, and installations. It sells out in advance, so book early if your dates align.
Late November sees Christmas market season beginning across the city. The Winter Parade, light installations along the canals, and the Sinterklaas arrival (early to mid-November) are all part of the seasonal calendar. It's a city that does winter well once it commits.
One Thing to Watch
Some smaller canal boat operators and outdoor attractions reduce hours or close entirely in November. The covered markets and indoor attractions run normally.
