Amsterdam in March: What to Expect

March is one of the better times to visit Amsterdam. The city shakes off its quiet winter mood, the first tulips start appearing at Keukenhof (which opens late March), and you get genuine shoulder-season prices before the Easter and summer crowds arrive. It is not yet warm, and it does rain, but Amsterdam in March has a specific energy that feels more local and less overrun.

Weather

Temperatures sit between 4°C and 10°C across the month, with the second half warming slightly. Rain is common and wind off the canals makes it feel colder than the numbers suggest. Pack a waterproof layer, comfortable walking shoes, and at least one warm mid-layer. Snow is possible in early March but rare and short-lived. By late March, longer daylight hours make the city noticeably more pleasant.

Crowds and Prices

March is solidly shoulder season until Keukenhof opens (late March) and Easter weekend, if it falls in March. Before those points, canal cruises, museums, and restaurants are noticeably quieter than April or August. Hotel prices are lower across the board. If Easter lands in late March, expect a sharp spike over that weekend specifically, with visitors arriving from across Europe. Book accommodation early if your dates overlap with Easter.

What's On

Keukenhof opens in late March, making it the most popular draw of the month. The tulip fields near Lisse hit their best colour in April, but late March visits still see early-season blooms. Amsterdam Light Festival wraps up in mid-January, so that is not a factor. Museumplein and the Vondelpark start coming to life with outdoor activity by mid-March. The Six Nations rugby final rounds often fall in March, drawing groups of British and Irish visitors to the city's sports bars.

One Thing to Watch

If Easter falls in March, the canal boat operators and major museums can sell out days in advance over the long weekend. Amsterdam is a popular Easter city break destination for Europeans, and the price jump is real. Check your dates against the Easter calendar before assuming March means quiet. Outside of Easter, though, the city is genuinely uncrowded by Amsterdam standards.
