July is Amsterdam's most visited month, and the city feels it. Canals fill up, queues form early, hotel rates climb, and the whole place hums with summer energy. It's genuinely fun, but it rewards people who plan ahead and start early.
Weather
Temperatures sit between 17°C and 23°C. That's warm but rarely oppressive, and the long daylight hours (sunset around 10pm) give you a lot of usable day. Pack a light jacket for evenings and something waterproof. Amsterdam gets short, sharp rain showers even in July. Sunscreen matters more than most visitors expect.
Crowds and Prices
This is peak season. School holidays across the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands overlap in July, so the city gets genuinely packed from mid-month onwards. Expect Anne Frank House queues even with timed tickets, packed trams, and restaurants running full covers at dinner. Hotel prices in July sit near their annual high. Book accommodation at least six to eight weeks out. Canal cruises and popular tours sell out days in advance.
What's On
Amsterdam Pride runs in late July and into early August. It's one of Europe's biggest LGBTQ+ events and the canal parade is genuinely spectacular. Book accommodation even earlier if your dates overlap. The rest of July sees outdoor cinema, festivals in Vondelpark, and a steady stream of live music across the city. The terrace culture hits its peak, and every bar with outdoor seating fills up by 6pm.
One Thing to Watch
Museumplein gets genuinely overwhelming in July. The Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum both operate timed entry, but the square itself, the surrounding streets, and the park fill with tour groups, cyclists, and day-trippers by mid-morning. Go early, 9am, or plan the museums on a weekday. Weekends in late July around Pride are the busiest of the whole year.
