Liverpool in March is a strong city break choice. The city is fully operational, the Albert Dock and Beatles attractions are running without summer queues, and the cultural calendar picks up with music and football providing constant reasons to be in the city. It is cold and will probably be wet at some point, but Liverpool's indoor culture, its pubs, music venues, galleries, and restaurants, makes it a compelling destination regardless of weather.
Weather
March in Liverpool runs from 4°C at night to 9°C to 10°C during the day. Rain is common and the Mersey wind cuts through most jackets. A proper waterproof layer is essential. Late March can bring milder days pushing to 12°C to 13°C and the occasional genuinely bright afternoon. The weather is not a reason to go to Liverpool, but it is also not a reason not to go, the city's indoor attractions are excellent.
Crowds and Prices
March is shoulder season for Liverpool. The Albert Dock, the Beatles Story, Tate Liverpool, and the Maritime Museum are all accessible without the queues they see in summer. Hotels are priced competitively. St Patrick's Day (17 March) is celebrated enthusiastically in Liverpool given its strong Irish heritage, with pubs in the city centre busy throughout the day. Mathew Street in particular becomes lively on the 17th.
What's On
Liverpool has one of England's strongest football cultures: Everton and Liverpool both play home games through March, and matchdays transform specific areas of the city. Checking the Premier League fixture list before booking gives you the option of catching a game or avoiding the added crowd if you prefer. The Liverpool International Music Festival has its main event in summer, but the city's live music scene in small venues and pubs runs year-round. Cavern Club on Mathew Street operates nightly.
One Thing to Watch
Liverpool vs Everton (the Merseyside Derby) when it falls in March is one of the biggest sporting events on the local calendar. Hotels and pubs near Anfield and Goodison Park book out, and central Liverpool becomes very busy. Check the fixture list: if a derby falls during your visit, decide in advance whether you want to be part of that atmosphere or around it.
