Lake Garda in December is a genuinely different destination from the summer version, and that difference is either appealing or a dealbreaker depending on what you're after. Most of the lakeside hotels and restaurants close for the season. The beaches are empty. The tourist boat services reduce to minimal winter schedules. What remains is beautiful: a dramatic Alpine lake in winter light, small Italian towns operating at their own pace, and Christmas markets in Riva del Garda and Desenzano that are pleasant and completely crowd-free. This is a trip for people who know what they're choosing.
Weather
Cold for northern Italy, and significantly colder than the Mediterranean south. December temperatures around the lake sit around 3°C to 8°C, with frost possible and occasional snow on the surrounding mountain ridges. The lake itself rarely freezes, but the wind off the water adds a sharp edge to the cold. Pack a proper winter coat and layers. Clear December days with the snow-capped Dolomites above and the lake below are genuinely beautiful.
Crowds and Prices
Very quiet. The accommodation that remains open in December is a fraction of the summer supply, and what does open offers good rates. The towns of Sirmione, Malcesine, Garda, and Limone are peaceful in a way they never are from April through September. The Roman villa ruins at Grotte di Catullo in Sirmione are accessible without queues. Some smaller towns on the western shore are essentially in hibernation, with most businesses closed from November through March.
What's On
Riva del Garda at the northern tip hosts a Christmas market through December that's well-regarded for the region: the backdrop of the lake and the mountains makes it particularly atmospheric. Desenzano del Garda on the southern shore also has festive events. The olive oil harvest completes in November, and December is a good time to visit the oil mills (frantoio) still in operation. The Verona Christmas market, one of Italy's better ones, is around 30 minutes away and worth a day trip.
One Thing to Watch
The ferry services on the lake reduce dramatically in winter. The full summer circuit around the lake is not possible in December. Plan transport around the reduced winter timetable, check the Navigazione Laghi schedule before you travel, and accept that some lakeside villages are only accessible by car in winter.
