September is the month Lake Garda earns its reputation. The intense August heat and the crowds that come with it drop noticeably from mid-month, the lake stays warm enough to swim in, and the towns around the shore go from difficult to delightful.

Weather

Early September at Lake Garda sits around 24 to 28°C, which is warm, sunny, and excellent for swimming and sailing. The lake temperature stays around 22 to 24°C well into September, so water activities are fully viable. By late September it cools to around 19 to 22°C for air temperatures, with clearer skies and the vineyards around the Bardolino and Soave areas turning colour. Pack light clothes with one warmer layer for evenings.

Crowds and Prices

Lake Garda in August is heavily dominated by German, Austrian, and northern European package tourists. The campsite towns like Lazise and Peschiera del Garda are particularly saturated. By mid-September this crowd leaves almost entirely, and the towns revert to something more authentically Italian. Sirmione, Malcesine, and Limone sul Garda all become genuinely enjoyable. Hotel and apartment prices drop from the August peak, and ferry connections around the lake remain fully operational through September.

What's On

The grape harvest takes place across the Garda wine region in September, with the Soave Wine Festival and Bardolino wine events happening along the eastern shore. The Regata delle Repubbliche Marinare rowing race alternates between Venice, Amalfi, Pisa, and Genoa, but water sports events on the lake continue through September regardless. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are particularly active in September when reliable afternoon winds make Riva del Garda and Torbole the best conditions of the year.

One Thing to Watch

Sirmione on the southern tip of the lake gets the most visitors per square metre. Even in September the narrow peninsula can feel congested in the middle of the day. Go early morning or late afternoon, when the light on the castle and the Roman villa ruins is best and the coach parties have thinned. The thermal spa in Sirmione is worth booking in advance for a September session.
