La Lonja de la Seda Valencia: The UNESCO Silk Exchange That Looks Like a Stone Forest
The Building That Proves Valencia Was Once Very Wealthy
In the late 15th century, Valencia was one of the most prosperous trading cities in the Mediterranean. The silk trade made it rich. And when a city has money and wants to show it, it builds something that lasts.
La Lonja de la Seda — the Silk Exchange — was built between 1482 and 1533 to serve as Valencia's main commercial exchange. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1996. It is, without qualification, the finest Gothic building in Valencia and one of the most beautiful secular Gothic structures in Europe.
