Athens Autumn Packing List: What to Pack for September, October and November

Autumn is arguably the best time to visit Athens. The summer heat breaks, the Acropolis queues shorten, and the city returns to something close to its normal self. September still runs warm, October cools to a comfortable range, and November stays mild by European standards. Packing for it is more straightforward than most cities -- you still need layers, just not heavy ones.

Compact umbrella or waterproof layer for November. Rain is not constant but it does arrive. A packable rain layer takes up almost no space and earns its place in November.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy coats. Even in November, Athens does not require a serious winter coat. A wool mid-layer plus a waterproof shell is more than enough.

Sandals with no grip. The marble paths around the Acropolis are polished smooth and become treacherous when damp. Leave the flat-soled fashion sandals for another trip.

Multiple formal outfits. Athens in autumn is relaxed. Smart casual handles most evenings. You do not need a wardrobe range.

Heavy boots. They are overkill for November and uncomfortable on the long walks between sites in September. Ankle boots work if you want something dressier than trainers.
