Seven days in Reykjavik is ideal. You get everything the city has to offer, time for the best day trips in Iceland, and enough breathing room to spend a whole evening chasing the Northern Lights without feeling like you sacrificed anything else.

What a Week Actually Gets You

The city itself takes two days, comfortably. Hallgrimskirkja, the old harbour, the Harpa concert hall, Laugavegur Street, the National Museum, a geothermal pool like Laugardalslaug. Day two adds Grotta lighthouse, the Settlement Exhibition, and a proper dinner somewhere on the waterfront.

Days three and four go to the classic day trips. The Golden Circle covers Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall in a single loop. The south coast route gives you the black sand beach at Reynisfjara, the waterfall at Skogafoss, and Seljalandsfoss where you can walk behind the water. Both days feel full without feeling rushed.

Days five and six are yours to pick from: whale watching in Faxafloi Bay, a glacier hike on Solheimajokull, the Reykjanes Peninsula with its lava fields and the Blue Lagoon, or a Snorkelling tour between tectonic plates at Silfra. In winter, any spare evening is a Northern Lights window.

Day seven is a slow morning in the city, good coffee, the Kolaportid flea market if it is a weekend, and an airport transfer that does not feel panicked.

What Still Gets Left Out

Iceland is a country, not just a city. The Westfjords, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, the Highlands, Akureyri in the north: none of these fit in a week based in Reykjavik. If the raw wilderness is what draws you, a week of driving the Ring Road covers more ground but requires planning of a different kind entirely.

The Blue Lagoon is also worth flagging: it books up weeks in advance, so if it is on your list, it needs to be booked before you book your flights.

How to Structure the Week

A week in Reykjavik works best with this kind of shape:

Days 1-2: Reykjavik city. Walk the harbour, do the museums, eat well, do a geothermal pool in the evening. Days 3-4: Golden Circle one day, south coast the next. Both are full-day tours or self-drives. Days 5-6: One activity day (glacier, whale watching, Blue Lagoon), one spare day for anything you missed or a rest. Day 7: Easy morning, airport by afternoon.

If you are travelling in winter, build Northern Lights chasing into every clear evening from day one.
