Is 7 Days in Munich Enough?

Seven days in Munich is ideal. Munich is a very good city to spend a week in: it has a strong cultural scene, excellent food and beer culture, a beautiful old town, and access to some of the best day trip destinations in Europe. You will cover the city well and still have time for the Bavarian Alps, Neuschwanstein, and Salzburg.

What a Week Actually Gets You

The Marienplatz and the Altstadt give you the classic Munich experience: the Neues Rathaus with its Glockenspiel, the Viktualienmarkt (one of the best food markets in Germany), and the surrounding streets. The English Garden (Englischer Garten) is larger than Central Park and genuinely excellent for a morning or afternoon. The surfers on the Eisbach river channel at the southern end of the park are one of Munich's more surprising sights.

The museum district around Kunstareal has the Alte Pinakothek (old masters), Neue Pinakothek (19th century), and Pinakothek der Moderne (modern art), all within walking distance of each other. The Deutsches Museum on the river island is one of the best science and technology museums in the world and worth half a day. The BMW Museum and the Olympic Park are worth combining on the same trip to the north of the city.

Beer gardens are a Munich institution and worth experiencing for their own sake. The Hofbrauhaus is the famous one and worth one visit. The beer gardens in the English Garden are better.

What Still Gets Left Out

Even with seven days, the Dachau Concentration Camp memorial site (about 30 minutes by train) tends to get delayed or skipped, though it deserves its own morning. The Nymphenburg Palace to the west of the city is impressive but loses out to the day trips for most visitors.

How to Structure the Week

Days 1 and 2 go to the city core. Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, the English Garden, and an evening in a beer garden.

Day 3 goes to the museum district. Alte Pinakothek in the morning, Neue or Moderne in the afternoon, depending on preference.

Day 4 is Neuschwanstein Castle. About two hours by train and bus. Book your castle entry in advance. The approach walk is worth doing properly.

Day 5 is Salzburg. About 90 minutes by train across the Austrian border. The old town, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and Mozart's birthplace. A full day and very much worth it.

Day 6 is the Bavarian Alps and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, reachable by cogwheel railway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen about 90 minutes from Munich.

Day 7 is for BMW Museum and Olympic Park in the morning, Dachau in the afternoon if you want to go, and a final evening in Munich.
