Is 5 Days in Paris Enough? Honest Answer

Five days in Paris is close to ideal for a first visit. Paris is a large, dense, and culturally inexhaustible city, and five days gives you enough time to get beyond the postcard version and into something more real.

What 5 Days Really Allows

The obvious Paris (Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Montmartre) fills two days done properly. The Louvre alone could fill a day and you'd still not see everything. Three-day visitors often do the Eiffel Tower, a Louvre sprint, and Montmartre, then leave feeling they've seen Paris. They haven't. Five days means you have three more days to find out what they missed.

The Musee d'Orsay is the Louvre's equal for 19th century art and consistently more enjoyable as an experience (the former train station is one of the finest gallery buildings in the world). The Pompidou Centre covers 20th century art and the architecture alone is worth 20 minutes. The Picasso Museum in the Marais is excellent and almost always quieter than the major galleries.

Beyond museums, Paris is a neighbourhood city. Le Marais rewards hours of wandering: the Place des Vosges, the Jewish quarter on Rue des Rosiers, the independent shops. Belleville and Menilmontant in the east are where young Parisians actually live and the street art, multicultural food, and Parc de Belleville with its view over the city are all undervisited. Canal Saint-Martin on a Sunday, with the locks and the iron footbridges, is one of the most pleasant spots in Paris and most tourists never reach it.

Five days means you get these places, not just the ones everyone goes to.

When 5 Days Isn't Quite Enough

Paris has 130 museums. Versailles alone deserves a full day and is only 35 minutes by RER from central Paris. If Versailles, Giverny (Monet's garden), and Chartres Cathedral all interest you, five days fills up very quickly. Six days would suit Paris better for anyone with broad cultural interests.

Day Trip Potential

Versailles is the most visited. Giverny (Monet's garden and house) is about 75 minutes from Paris and extraordinary in spring. Chartres Cathedral is about 90 minutes by train: the finest Gothic cathedral in France by most assessments, and the medieval stained glass is unmatched. Provins is 90 minutes east: a remarkably preserved medieval market town with underground tunnels.
