Is 4 Days in Munich Enough? Honest Answer

Four days in Munich is excellent. The city rewards two good days of exploration and the surrounding Bavaria offers two more of the best day trips in Germany. You'll leave with the Hofbräuhaus under your belt, a gallery or two, and possibly one of the most dramatic castles in Europe if you time the Neuschwanstein visit well.

What 4 Days Unlocks

Munich's main areas can be covered thoroughly in two days. The Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche in the centre; the English Garden with the river surfers and the Chinese Tower beer garden; the Viktualienmarkt for food and market culture; the Deutsches Museum for anyone with a serious interest in science and technology (it's enormous: plan properly). The Nymphenburg Palace and its formal gardens take a morning and are worth the tram ride out.

The Pinakothek museum cluster in Maxvorstadt is one of the best museum concentrations in Germany: Old, New, and Modern Pinakothek, plus the Museum Brandhorst. You can't do all of them in four days but picking one and giving it proper time is the right approach.

The day trips are where four days pays off most clearly.

Neuschwanstein Castle, the fairytale creation of Ludwig II above the village of Füssen, is two hours from Munich by train. It's one of the most visited sites in Germany for good reason: the exterior is extraordinary, the interior is theatrical excess, and the views from the Marienbrücke bridge above it are worth a long detour. Book timed entry in advance.

Salzburg in Austria is 90 minutes by train and entirely worth a full day: the Old City, Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the Mozart connection. Four days from Munich makes this an easy addition.

What You'll Still Miss

The Bavarian Alps, including the Zugspitze (Germany's highest peak) and Berchtesgaden with its Eagle's Nest, are both within reach but deserve more than a rushed day trip. Four days won't do both justice.

Regensburg and Nuremberg are excellent Bavarian cities that compete for your day-trip days.

How to Structure 4 Days Well

Day 1: Munich centre. Marienplatz, the market, the English Garden. Beer garden in the afternoon.

Day 2: Nymphenburg Palace in the morning. One of the Pinakothek museums in the afternoon. Hofbräuhaus in the evening (touristy but you should do it at least once).

Day 3: Neuschwanstein Castle. Full day. Book timed entry ahead of arrival.

Day 4: Salzburg, or a slow Munich day for anything you haven't covered yet.
