Two days in Paris covers the famous landis and the view from the Eiffel Tower, but it doesn't give you Paris. The city has depth that takes more than 48 hours to reach. Two days is a beginning.
What You Can Cover in 2 Days
Two days in Paris:
- The Louvre. Book timed entry well in advance. Allow three hours minimum. The Louvre is enormous: decide in advance which wings you want to see rather than trying to cover it all.
- The Eiffel Tower. Book the summit ticket at least two weeks in advance. The tower queues without a booking can be three hours long. An evening visit is better than daytime.
- Notre-Dame and the Ile de la Cite. Notre-Dame is being restored after the 2019 fire, but the island and the exterior are worth visiting. The Sainte-Chapelle on the same island has the finest medieval stained glass in the world.
- One Right Bank and one Left Bank neighbourhood. Le Marais on the Right Bank for history, galleries, and the best falafel in the city. Saint-Germain-des-Pres on the Left Bank for the cafes, the Musee d'Orsay, and the Jardin du Luxembourg.
What You'll Miss
Two days in Paris:
- The Musee d'Orsay. The Impressionist masterpieces (Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh) are in the Orsay, not the Louvre. On a two-day visit, the Louvre typically wins and the Orsay gets cut. This is a real loss.
- Montmartre. The hilltop artists' district with the Sacre-Coeur and the Place du Tertre. It deserves a full morning and usually gets an hour.
- The food culture properly. Paris's boulangeries, bistros, and markets take time to navigate. Two days gives you four meals and no chance to develop a routine.
- Day trips. Versailles, Chartres Cathedral, and the Champagne region are all within striking distance. None of them fit a two-day Paris visit.
How to Make the Most of It
- Book the Louvre and Eiffel Tower summit before you travel. Both are non-negotiable advance bookings. The Eiffel Tower especially sells out weeks ahead.
- Pick one museum, not two. The Louvre or the Orsay, not both. Each needs a full morning to do properly.
- Walk the Seine. Paris's most impressive views are from the river bridges. An evening walk from Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower along the Left Bank takes ninety minutes and is one of the best urban walks in Europe.
- Eat at a traditional bistro once. The steak-frites, the wine carafe, the zinc bar. It's not a cliche, it's Paris being Paris.
The Honest Verdict
Two days in Paris gives you the landis and a glimpse of the city. The real Paris, with its arrondissement rhythms, its neighbourhood cafes, and its Sunday markets, takes longer to reach. Come back.
