Getting Between the Cities

Direct flights between Istanbul (IST or SAW) and Sofia (SOF) take around 1h30min. Wizz Air and Turkish Airlines both operate the route; fares start at roughly €30-60 one-way if booked in advance. There is also a train, but the journey takes 10-12 hours and involves a change — only worth it if you have strong feelings about overland travel.

Istanbul is the reason most people book this trip. The Grand Bazaar, the Hagia Sophia, the Bosphorus, the food in Karakoy and Beyoglu, the ferry rides between continents: there is a lot here and none of it is overhyped. Give it the majority of your time.

Sofia

Sofia is genuinely underrated but not in a way that turns it into a hidden gem cliche. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is striking, the Soviet-era architecture gives the city a distinct visual character, and the street food and cafe scene around Vitosha Boulevard is excellent for the price. It adds a different historical register to the trip without competing with Istanbul for attention.
