Istanbul in March is seriously underrated. The Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar are accessible without the summer crush, flight prices are lower, and the city's food scene, from simit carts to rooftop meyhanes, is in full swing. March sits at the tail end of Istanbul's off-season, and the city rewards visitors who come before the crowds.
Weather
March temperatures in Istanbul range from 7°C at night to 12°C to 14°C during the day. Rain is common, particularly in early March. The Bosphorus wind makes it feel cooler than the numbers suggest. A warm jacket and a waterproof layer are essential. Late March can bring sunny stretches reaching 16°C to 18°C, and those days are excellent for walking along the waterfront and exploring the outdoor spice markets. By the end of the month, the city is clearly moving into spring.
Crowds and Prices
March is low season for Istanbul by any measure. The Hagia Sophia (now a mosque, entry restricted during prayer times), Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar are all quieter than they become from April onward. The Bosphorus ferry routes are running but without the summer boat traffic. Hotel prices, particularly in Sultanahmet and Beyoglu, are significantly lower than peak season. For a city that can feel overwhelming in summer, March gives you space to actually experience it.
What's On
Nowruz (Persian and Turkish New Year) falls on 21 March and is celebrated by Turkey's Kurdish population and in some communities across Istanbul. It is a cultural moment rather than a tourist event, but you may encounter street celebrations. Ramadan can fall in March depending on the Islamic calendar: if it does, dining patterns shift across the city, with restaurants and cafes busier after sunset for iftar. Check current year dates.
One Thing to Watch
The Hagia Sophia is a functioning mosque and has restricted access during the five daily prayer times. Plan your visit around the prayer schedule to avoid arriving and finding entry closed. The Blue Mosque is also a functioning mosque with similar restrictions. Mornings between prayer times are generally the best window for visiting both. Check current times before you go as they shift seasonally.
