May is an excellent month to visit Istanbul. The weather is warm but not yet the scorching heat of July and August, the Bosphorus is beautiful, and the city's markets, mosques, and rooftop restaurants are all fully operational. It's one of the few months where conditions, crowds, and prices align well enough to make a strong recommendation.

Weather

Temperatures range from 15°C to 22°C in May, with mostly sunny days and occasional rain. It's genuinely comfortable sightseeing weather: warm enough for light layers but not exhausting. Evenings are pleasant for outdoor dining. A light jacket works for mornings and nights.

Crowds and Prices

Istanbul has grown significantly as a tourist destination and May sees a steady flow of visitors, but it's well below the summer peak. The main sites, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, the Topkapi Palace, are busy during the day but not gridlocked. Book timed entry for Topkapi in advance. Hotel prices are reasonable in May relative to summer, especially compared to Western European cities of similar stature.

What's On

1 May is Labour Day in Turkey, a public holiday that has historically been associated with political gatherings in Istanbul's main squares. Authorities sometimes restrict access to Taksim Square on this day. Check local news if your visit falls on 1 May and plan accordingly.

Istanbul Tulip Festival runs through April and usually extends into early May, with millions of tulips planted in parks across the city, particularly Emirgan Park. It's one of the city's most visually striking events and a major draw for visitors.

One Thing to Watch

Hagia Sophia operates as an active mosque and has specific protocols for visitors. Dress modestly, remove shoes at the entrance, and note that prayer times temporarily restrict tourist access. The queues to enter can be long by late morning. Arrive early, before 9am if possible, for the most peaceful visit and the best light inside.

Our Istanbul travel guide covers the city in full: the best neighbourhoods, transport, where to eat, and how to manage the major sights without losing a day to queuing.
