Amsterdam and Paris is one of the most popular two-city combinations in Europe, and for good reason. The Thalys high-speed train connects them in around 3.5 hours, the cities contrast sharply in feel and scale, and both reward even a short stay. This combination works for first-time visitors and repeat travellers equally.

Why This Combination Works

Paris and Amsterdam are close neighbours that feel nothing alike. Paris is grand, formal, and built for spectacle; Amsterdam is compact, casual, and built around the canal. Between them you get two of the world's best art collections, completely different street-level energy, and a journey time short enough that neither stay feels like a stopover.

For a short trip (6 nights total): 2 nights Amsterdam, 4 nights Paris. Paris genuinely needs more time — there's more ground to cover and the city reveals itself slowly.

For a longer trip (9 nights total): 3 nights Amsterdam, 6 nights Paris. Three nights in Amsterdam is enough to cover the main neighbourhoods without padding; Paris can absorb additional days without effort.

Getting Between the Cities

Take the Thalys or Eurostar (via Brussels) high-speed train. Amsterdam Centraal to Paris Gare du Nord takes around 3h20min direct. This is faster, cheaper in time, and more comfortable than flying when you account for check-in and airport transfers. Tickets start from around €40 one-way booked early through Thalys or SNCF. Book at least 3-4 weeks ahead for the best fares.

Flights exist but are slower door-to-door and not worth considering for this route.

Which City to Visit First

Start in Amsterdam. It's a calmer city to begin a trip in, and arriving into Paris at the end — stepping off the train at Gare du Nord into full Parisian density — makes a strong impression. The contrast lands harder if Paris is last.

What Each City Adds to the Trip

Amsterdam

Amsterdam gives you the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the canal belt at its most picturesque, and a food scene built around markets and informal eating. It's a city you can walk or cycle in a couple of days and feel like you've genuinely understood it.

Paris

Paris adds scale, architecture, and cultural depth that Amsterdam can't match. The Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Montmartre, the food markets, the café culture — Paris is inexhaustible in the best way. No European city quite replaces it.
