Amsterdam and Antwerp are less than two hours apart by train and make for one of the most underrated two-city combinations in northwest Europe. Antwerp is consistently overlooked in favour of Brussels, but it's a better city for most travellers: a proper medieval old town, an extraordinary cathedral, one of Europe's finest fashion scenes, and a food culture that doesn't get nearly enough credit.

Why This Combination Works

Amsterdam and Antwerp are neighbouring cities with distinct identities. Amsterdam is famous and busy; Antwerp feels discovered by the right people and still pleasantly unhurried. Together they cover canal cities, Gothic architecture, diamonds, world-class museums, and some of the best chocolate and beer in Europe. The geography makes the combination almost effortless.

For a short trip (4 nights total): 2 nights Amsterdam, 2 nights Antwerp. Two nights each is enough to cover the essentials in both. Antwerp is a compact city and two days is genuinely sufficient.

For a longer trip (6 nights total): 3 nights Amsterdam, 3 nights Antwerp. The extra night in Antwerp opens up a day trip to Bruges (30 minutes by train), which dramatically increases the value of this itinerary.

Getting Between the Cities

Train is the only sensible option. Amsterdam Centraal to Antwerp-Centraal takes around 1h40min on direct Intercity trains run jointly by NS and NMBS. No booking required — just buy a ticket on the day or book in advance for a small saving. Tickets typically cost €25-40 one-way.

Antwerp-Centraal station is one of the most beautiful railway stations in Europe and worth arriving into rather than flying over.

Which City to Visit First

Start in Amsterdam. Most travellers will fly into Schiphol, making Amsterdam the natural starting point. Ending in Antwerp means you finish in a city that tends to pleasantly surprise people.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam delivers the canal belt, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and a cycling culture that's genuinely fun to participate in rather than just observe. It's a city with huge international name recognition that usually lives up to it.

Antwerp

Antwerp adds the Cathedral of Our Lady (housing four Rubens altarpieces), the extraordinary Antwerp-Centraal station, the diamond district, and a fashion and design scene that draws serious visitors from across Europe. The old town is smaller and quieter than Amsterdam but more intimate for it.
