Edinburgh in December is one of Europe's great winter city breaks. The city gets busy, prices are high in the festive weeks, and Hogmanay tickets sell out months in advance. Come prepared or come in early December when it's calmer and cheaper. Weather

Cold and typically Scottish. December temperatures sit around 2°C to 7°C, with a real feel of winter. Rain and wind are expected. The Old Town looks extraordinary in these conditions: frost on the closes, the castle emerging from low cloud, the cobblestones reflecting the Christmas lights. Dress for it properly and the weather becomes part of the atmosphere rather than an obstacle.

Crowds and Prices

Early December is the quieter and significantly cheaper option. The Christmas market is running but the city hasn't hit its festive peak. The Royal Mile, Victoria Street, and the Grassmarket are atmospheric without being overwhelming. That shifts considerably in the week before Christmas and especially in the Hogmanay period. New Year in Edinburgh is one of the world's most famous NYE celebrations, and accommodation in the Hogmanay window, 30 December to 2 January, books out months in advance. Prices during Hogmanay are among the highest of the entire year.

What's On

Edinburgh's Christmas market runs through Princes Street Gardens and St Andrew Square from late November to 5 January. It's one of the better UK Christmas markets: good food, German and Scottish craft stalls, ice rinks, and the backdrop of the castle and the gardens. Hogmanay is the main event for New Year. The street party on Princes Street requires a ticket, sells out fast, and involves live music, a torchlight procession on 30 December, a Loony Dook swim on New Year's Day, and fireworks at midnight from the castle. If you're in Edinburgh for New Year, this is not something to miss. Book Hogmanay tickets the moment they go on sale, typically several months ahead.

One Thing to Watch

Hogmanay street party tickets sell out completely, sometimes within hours of release. If New Year is your reason for visiting Edinburgh in December, check the Hogmanay ticketing site as soon as dates are announced and do not assume you can get tickets closer to the time.
