The Amalfi Coast is one of Europe's most spectacular coastlines. Sorrento is a proper seaside town. Both are easily accessible from Naples for day trips.

The difference between a rushed day trip and a proper experience is timing and expectations. Don't try to do Amalfi-Ravello-Sorrento in one day – you'll spend 6 hours on transport and 2 hours actually experiencing things.

Sorrento – The Easiest Option

Sorrento is directly accessible via the Circumvesuviana train from Naples (1 hour, €4).

It's a proper seaside town perched on cliffs. The main attraction is the town itself – charming, walkable, with views back toward Naples and across the bay toward Capri.

What to actually do:

  • Walk the main streets (Via Tasso, Piazza Tasso) – genuine shops and cafes
  • Sit at a cafe and people-watch
  • Grab lunch at a seafood restaurant overlooking the bay
  • Walk to the cliffs and take photos
  • Maybe visit the minor attractions (museums, churches) if you want structure

Realistic timing: Arrive 10am, walk until 1pm, lunch 1-3pm, more walking 3-5pm, return train 5-6pm.

Cost: €4 train, €10-15 lunch, €8-12 drinks/snacks = €25-30 total.

Honest assessment: Sorrento is pleasant but not life-changing. It's a nice afternoon if you're based in Naples. Don't make special trips if you've got limited time – focus on Naples itself.

Amalfi – The Iconic Destination

Amalfi is more dramatic than Sorrento – the town sits in a dramatic bay surrounded by tall cliffs. It's genuinely beautiful.

Getting there: Take Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, then SITA bus to Amalfi (1 hour, €3-4). Total transport: 2.5 hours from Naples.

Alternatively, take a Viator boat tour from Naples (€70-100), which includes Amalfi and sometimes Positano. You're paying more but eliminating land transport chaos.

What to do:

  • Walk the waterfront – stunning
  • Explore the Cathedral and its museum
  • Grab lunch at a waterfront restaurant
  • Maybe hike up the cliffs or explore surrounding villages

Realistic timing: If using buses, you need 6 hours (2.5 hours transport each way, 1.5 hours in town). If using ferry tour, usually 4-5 hours total.

Cost: Bus option: €8 transport, €15-20 lunch = €25-30. Ferry tour: €70-100.

Honest assessment: Amalfi is genuinely beautiful. It's worth a day trip if you've got time. The bus route is beautiful (winding through cliffs) but slow.

Ravello – The Dramatic Option

Ravello sits even higher on cliffs than Amalfi, looking down on the coast 365m below. It's genuinely spectacular and genuinely quieter.

Getting there: From Amalfi, SITA bus climbs to Ravello (30 minutes, €2). You'll need Amalfi as a transport hub.

What to do:

  • Walk through the small town center
  • Visit Villa Rufolo (famous villa with gardens), €6 entry
  • Visit Villa Cimbrone (equally famous), €8 entry
  • Sit at a terrace and contemplate the views

The villas are genuinely beautiful and the views are genuinely extraordinary.

Realistic timing: As extension of Amalfi day – add 3-4 hours to Amalfi timing.

Cost: €4 transport, €14 villa entry, €10 lunch = €30-35 additional.

Honest assessment: Ravello is genuinely worth seeing if you've got time. It's less touristy than Amalfi. The villas are legitimately beautiful.

Positano – The Pretty Option

Positano sits between Amalfi and Sorrento on the coast. It's absurdly pretty – pastel houses cascading down cliffs to a small beach.

It's also expensive and genuinely touristy. Food is pricey, shops are boutique, the vibe is "Instagram spot."

Getting there: SITA bus from Sorrento (1 hour, €2-3) or Amalfi (30 minutes, €2).

What to do: Honestly, walk the town and take photos. The beach is small and crowded. Restaurants are expensive and mediocre (you're paying location, not quality).

Realistic timing: 2-3 hours is enough. You'll have seen everything.

Cost: Buses €4, lunch €20-30 minimum, drinks €8-12 = €35-45.

Honest assessment: Positano is pretty. It's worth a 2-hour stop if you're doing Amalfi anyway. Don't make a special trip – transport time isn't worth it.

The Practical Day Trip

Option 1 – Just Sorrento: Day trip, 1 hour transport, genuinely relaxing, cheap. Best for: limited time, first-time visitors, anyone wanting simple.

Option 2 – Sorrento + Positano: Day trip, 2 hours each location, 2 hours transport. Requires early start and efficient timing. Better is staying overnight in Sorrento and adding next day.

Option 3 – Amalfi + Ravello: Day trip if you skip detailed exploring, 4-5 hours transport/waiting, 2-3 hours actual time. Better is overnight in Amalfi.

Option 4 – Ferry boat tour (Viator): Pre-arranged, hits multiple spots, no logistics stress. Cost is higher but organisation is better.

The Honest Assessment

The Amalfi Coast is genuinely beautiful. It's worth experiencing. But it's not efficient as day trips from Naples – the transport time eats into experience time.

If you've got 5+ days in the region, consider staying overnight in Sorrento or Amalfi, then day-tripping to other spots. You'll experience more with less stress.

If you've got 3-4 days total in Naples, skip Amalfi Coast day trips. Focus on Naples, Pompeii/Herculaneum, and maybe Capri. Amalfi Coast is better as its own destination with overnight stays.
