Budget Accommodation in Ljubljana: Hostels, Guesthouses, and Where to Stay Cheaply

Ljubljana is not an expensive city by Western European standards. Budget accommodation ranges from well-run hostel dormitories to small guesthouses in the old town, and the city's compact size means that being 15 minutes from the centre on foot is not a meaningful disadvantage.

Hostel Celica

The first choice for anyone comfortable with hostel accommodation. The Hostel Celica occupies the former military prison cells of the Metelkova barracks — 20 cells converted into individual rooms by 20 different designers, each room architecturally distinct. The structure of the cells is preserved; you sleep in what was a prison, with bars on the windows and visible stonework. No two rooms are identical.

It is ten minutes on foot from the old town, adjacent to Metelkova Mesto, and one of the most unusual hostels in Europe by any measure. Dormitory beds and private cell rooms are available. Book well in advance.

Dormitory rates: approximately €25–35 per bed. Private cells: approximately €70–100 per room. These are hostel prices for a hostel with hotel-grade distinction.

Central Hostels

Hostel Tresor (Čopova ulica): converted from a former bank vault, central location, a short walk from the Triple Bridge. Standard hostel facilities — dormitories and private rooms, bar, communal kitchen. One of the better-reviewed mid-range hostels in the city.

Fluxus Hostel (Tomšičeva ulica): a smaller, quieter option in the centre. Lower capacity than Tresor and correspondingly less social, but well located and reliable for solo travellers.

H2O Hostel (Petkovškovo nabrežje): on the river, good location for the café and bar strip. A more social hostel with events programming; slightly louder than Fluxus.

Guesthouses and Cheap Hotels

Ljubljana has several family-run guesthouses (penzion) in the old town and surrounding neighbourhoods. Prices for a private double room typically start at €60–80 in shoulder season, rising to €100–120 in July and August.

Booking.com lists the most complete current inventory. The Šiška and Bežigrad neighbourhoods north of the centre have cheaper guesthouses accessible by bus; the old town options carry a location premium.

Practical Notes

Prices by season: Ljubljana is least expensive in November–February (excluding New Year). July and August are peak; the Green Festival (June) and summer events push occupancy up. Book any distinctive property (Celica, riverside guesthouses) at least 4–6 weeks ahead for summer visits.

Location trade-offs: the city is 5 km across at its widest. Staying in Metelkova (Hostel Celica) puts you 10 minutes from the old town. Staying in the residential north is 20 minutes by bus. Neither is a hardship — Ljubljana is not the kind of city where location determines your entire experience.

Private rooms on Booking.com: consistently cheaper than comparable Western European cities. A well-reviewed private room in the centre for €70–80 represents genuine value against Paris, Amsterdam, or London equivalents.
