A rooftop bar with an Acropolis view is the cliche Athens experience. But it's a cliche for a reason: watching the Parthenon glow at sunset while sipping a cocktail is genuinely magical. Here's where to do it right.

The Rooftop Bar Scene

Athens has dozens of rooftop bars. Most are overpriced tourist traps. A few are legitimate. The key is knowing which rooftops actually have unobstructed Acropolis views (many don't, despite claims).

Price expectations: Cocktails range €10–16 depending on location. Tourist rooftops charge €14–18. Neighborhood rooftops charge €10–12. Wine is €5–8 by the glass. A night out (2 cocktails, food, tip) will run €40–60 per person.

The Best Rooftop Bars

A for Athens (Plaka): Central location, solid cocktails, Acropolis view from the terrace. €13 cocktails. Gets crowded at sunset but that's the point. Popular with everyone—both tourists and some locals.

Brettos (Plaka): Historic bar, colorful bottles lining the walls, small rooftop with Acropolis views. €12–14 cocktails. Less crowded than A for Athens. Better vibe, fewer tourists, same view.

Balthazar (Psyrri): Upscale-casual rooftop in a hip neighborhood. Strong cocktails, good food, Acropolis view. €14–16 cocktails. Less touristy than central rooftops. The vibe is more authentic, the crowd is younger.

Hotel Grande Bretagne Roof Garden (Syntagma): The historic luxury hotel's rooftop bar. €16–18 cocktails, but the view is unobstructed and the service is pristine. Worth splurging for one drink if you want the luxury experience.

Attica (Thisio): Neighborhood rooftop in a less touristy area. Good cocktails, reasonable prices (€11–13), quieter than central options. Better value than tourist rooftops.

TA (Koukaki): Modern rooftop in the trendy Koukaki neighborhood. €12–14 cocktails, younger crowd, Acropolis view (partial but respectable). Most authentic neighborhood experience.

The Reality Check

Many rooftop bars claim Acropolis views but deliver a sliver of the Parthenon between buildings. Some don't deliver views at all. Before you commit, ask: "Is there an unobstructed view of the Acropolis?" and watch the server's face. They'll either confirm confidently or hedge.

The Sunset Strategy

Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good table. Sunset times: 8–9 PM (summer), 5–6 PM (winter).

Order something light if you just want the view: A glass of wine (€5–8) or a beer (€5) instead of a full cocktail. You're here for the moment, not the drink.

Stay for one drink and move on. Rooftop bars are best for the moment (sunset + view). They're not designed for long evenings. Grab your moment and head to dinner or another bar.

Where to Eat First, Then Drink

If you want to combine dinner and rooftop views:

  • Thisio neighborhood: Eat at a taverna, then rooftop bar at Attica.
  • Koukaki: Dinner in the neighborhood, then rooftop at TA.
  • Plaka: This is harder because rooftop bars in Plaka are mostly tourist-oriented. Eat elsewhere, then come to Plaka for drinks.

Neighborhood Bars Without the "Rooftop" Label

If rooftop bars feel too touristy, hang out at regular bars in hip neighborhoods:

  • Psyrri: Wine bars, craft breweries, standing-room-only spots. €4–10 per drink. Younger, grittier, more authentic.
  • Gazi: Similar vibe to Psyrri, slightly older crowd.
  • Koukaki: Quieter, more upscale-casual bars. €8–12 per drink.

Tips for Not Getting Ripped Off

  1. Check the price menu before ordering. Every rooftop bar has one; ask to see it.
  2. Order wine instead of cocktails. Same cost, better value for money.
  3. Skip fancy cocktails with weird ingredients. A properly made martini or mojito is better than a "signature" drink that costs €18.
  4. Avoid rooftop bars in heavy tourist areas during peak hours. Go to neighborhood rooftops instead.

Our Take

One rooftop sunset moment in Athens is worth it—grab that experience at A for Athens or Brettos. But don't spend your entire evening in rooftop bars. Use them for aperitif (sunset + one drink), then move to a regular neighborhood bar or dinner.

The best night in Athens: dinner at a Thisio taverna, then one cocktail at a rooftop bar, then drinks at a neighborhood wine bar in Psyrri with actual Athenians.
