Athens in March: What to Expect

March is a genuinely good month for Athens. The summer crowds have not arrived, the Acropolis is walkable without the peak-season heat, and prices are noticeably lower than June through September. Athenians are starting to spend time outdoors again, the city feels alive, and you get one of Europe's great ancient sites largely to yourself. For most visitors, March is underrated.

Weather

Temperatures range from 9°C at night to around 16°C during the day. It is mild by northern European standards, though Athenians would call it cool. Rain is a real possibility, particularly in early March, but clear days are common and the light is excellent for photography. Pack layers and a light waterproof rather than heavy winter gear. By late March, the city regularly hits 17°C to 18°C on sunny afternoons.

Crowds and Prices

Visitor numbers are low in March compared to April through October. The Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, and the Ancient Agora are accessible without the queues that define summer visits. Hotels in Plaka, Monastiraki, and Koukaki are priced well below peak rates. If Easter falls in late March, expect a brief surge over the long weekend, as Greek Orthodox Easter is the country's biggest public holiday and domestic travel picks up sharply.

What's On

Greek Independence Day falls on 25 March and is a national holiday with a military parade on Syntagma Square. It is worth catching if you are in the city. Some businesses and smaller museums may be closed that day, so plan accordingly. The Apokries (Greek Carnival) season wraps up in February or early March depending on the year, but celebrations can spill into early March in some neighbourhoods.

One Thing to Watch

Greek Orthodox Easter and Western Easter do not always align. If they fall at different times, Athens experiences two separate holiday surges across spring. Check which Easter dates apply to your trip. Smaller tavernas and family-run guesthouses sometimes close for a few days around Orthodox Easter even if it falls in April, so confirm opening times before booking around that period.
