Amsterdam in summer lands somewhere between pleasant and unpredictable. June through August brings warm days with temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, but the city sits at the same latitude as southern Canada. Rain comes without notice, wind picks up off the canals, and a sunny morning can turn grey by afternoon without much warning. Pack accordingly.
The Heat/Weather Strategy
Summer in Amsterdam is not Mediterranean heat. You will not bake. You will, however, get caught in a sharp shower or a cool canal breeze at 8pm when you are dressed for the afternoon. The sweet spot is light layers you can add and remove. A T-shirt base with a light jacket or hoodie gets you through most days. Umbrella weather is a genuine possibility any day of the week, not just a precaution.
City-Specific Must-Haves
Amsterdam runs on cycling and walking over cobblestone streets and across canal bridges. Your shoes do real work here. Comfortable flat-soled shoes or trainers with grip are a must, as the bridge surfaces and tram tracks can be slippery when wet.
A compact rain jacket earns its place in your day bag every day. Not a full waterproof, just something you can stuff into a pocket and pull on fast when the sky changes its mind.
If you plan to cycle, which you should, the city does not care what you wear, but cycling in a long open coat or loose trousers near the chain is a recipe for a bad afternoon. Think fitted, practical, and wind-resistant.
Sunscreen matters despite the latitude. The combination of direct sun reflecting off canal water and long summer daylight hours (Amsterdam stays light past 10pm in June) means cumulative UV exposure adds up faster than expected.
What to Leave Behind
Leave the big rolling suitcase at home if you can. Amsterdam's tram stops, canal bridges, and hotel doorways are not built for oversized luggage. A mid-size bag you can carry without wheels makes navigating the city considerably easier.
Heavy knitwear is overkill in summer. A light merino or cotton layer does everything a thick jumper does without taking up half your bag. You also do not need formal shoes unless you have a specific dinner planned: Amsterdam dresses casually even at decent restaurants.
Leave the umbrella behind too and buy one there if needed, or just pack a rain jacket. A full umbrella is the most awkward thing to carry on a busy tram.
Plan the Full Trip
A good packing list is the starting point. The harder part is knowing which neighbourhoods to stay in, which museums to book ahead and which you can walk into, and how to get around without accidentally cycling down a pedestrian lane. Our Amsterdam city guide covers the decisions that actually affect your trip, from canal cruise timing to brown cafe basics.
