You land at Tallinn Airport, grab your bag, and step outside. You're braced for the usual airport chaos — taxi touts, confusing bus stops, 40-minute journeys. And then you notice: the tram stop is literally right outside the terminal. Fifteen minutes later you're in the city centre.
Tallinn Airport transfer is, genuinely, one of the easiest in Europe. Here's how it works.
Tram #4: The Right Answer for Almost Everyone
Tram #4 runs directly from Tallinn Airport to the city centre. It's cheap, frequent, and takes about 15 minutes to reach Viru Keskus (the main transport hub right next to the Old Town).
The stop is immediately outside the arrivals hall — follow the signs, you can't miss it.
What you need to know:
- Cost: €1.50 per trip (pay by contactless card at the validator on board — tap on, tap off)
- Frequency: every 10–15 minutes during peak hours
- Hours: roughly 06:00–23:00 daily
- Journey time: 15 minutes to Viru Keskus
- The tram runs whether it's -20°C in January or a warm Baltic summer evening — reliable year-round
No ticket machine needed. No app required. Just tap your contactless card or bank card directly on the validator when you board. It's genuinely that simple.
The Tram Route
From the airport, Tram #4 runs through Ülemiste (a shopping district — ignore it), then directly into central Tallinn, terminating near Viru Keskus. From there, Old Town is a 3-minute walk.
If your accommodation is in the Old Town, Kalamaja, or Kadriorg, this is your ride.
What About the Bus?
Bus #2 and a few other routes also serve the airport. They're fine, but slower and less direct than the tram. Unless you have a specific reason, stick to Tram #4.
When a Taxi Makes Sense
Tallinn's airport is small enough that taxi touts aren't a serious problem, but it's still worth knowing what you should pay.
A metered taxi from the airport to the city centre should cost €8–12 depending on traffic. The journey takes 10–15 minutes.
Use taxis if:
- You're arriving late at night (after trams stop)
- You have heavy luggage and your accommodation is uphill in Old Town
- You're travelling with 3–4 people (split the fare, beats multiple tram tickets)
- You've booked a hotel somewhere that isn't near a tram stop
Bolt (Estonia's Uber equivalent, actually founded in Tallinn) works reliably at the airport. Open the app before you land, request a ride from arrivals — prices are transparent and you won't get overcharged.
Avoid unmarked taxis or drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Use Bolt or the metered taxi rank outside.
The Airport Itself
People genuinely call Tallinn Airport one of the cosiest in Europe, and it's not wrong. It's compact, human-scaled, and free of the soul-crushing expanse of Heathrow or Frankfurt. There's a decent café, fast WiFi, and you won't spend 20 minutes walking to the exit.
If you're connecting through or have a wait, it's not a bad place to be.
Getting Back to the Airport
Same deal in reverse. Tram #4 from Viru Keskus to the airport takes 15 minutes. Allow 30 minutes from Old Town to the airport if you're walking to the tram stop and your flight is early.
For a 06:00 flight, check the first tram departure — if it's too close to your check-in time, book a Bolt the night before.
The Bottom Line
Tram #4 is the answer. It costs €1.50, takes 15 minutes, runs every 10 minutes, and drops you right next to Old Town. Unless you're travelling late at night or with a pile of luggage, you don't need a taxi.
The fact that Tallinn has sorted its airport transfer this efficiently is a quiet flex. Most European capitals charge four times as much for twice the hassle.
