Four days in Istanbul is enough to do the historic core properly and start reaching into the city's other personalities. Istanbul is enormous and two continents wide, so four days won't exhaust it, but it gets you past the tourist surface and into something that feels more like the real city.

What 4 Days Unlocks

The Sultanahmet district, where most of the big historical sites cluster, can be covered in two intensive days. Four days means you don't have to rush it.

You can give Hagia Sophia the hour it deserves without watching the clock. The Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern can be spread across two days so you're not overdosing on history. The Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Spice Market are best visited at different times of day with different energy levels, and four days gives you that flexibility.

The Bosphorus boat trip, one of the great pleasures of any Istanbul visit, becomes a leisurely half-day rather than a rushed excursion. The Asian side of the city, reached by ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy, is a genuinely different experience: Kadıköy market, Moda neighbourhood, the fish restaurants along the waterfront. It's 20 minutes on the boat and a world away.

Beyoğlu and Istiklal Avenue, the modern heart of the European side, take on a different character in the evening and four days lets you go back more than once.

What You'll Still Miss

Istanbul is 39 districts across two continents and four days sees a fraction of them. The Princes' Islands, a ferry ride into the Sea of Marmara with Ottoman summer houses and no cars, are a wonderful half-day that most short stays miss.

The Bosphorus villages further up the strait, Bebek and Arnavutköy for cafes and Sunday brunch, Ortaköy for the mosque under the bridge, Emirgan for parks: these are the Istanbul that Istanbulites inhabit, and four days rarely reaches them properly.

How to Structure 4 Days Well

Day 1: Sultanahmet. Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and the Hippodrome. Grand Bazaar in the afternoon. Dinner near Beyoğlu.

Day 2: Topkapi Palace in the morning (book timed entry). Basilica Cistern. Bosphorus boat trip in the afternoon.

Day 3: Asian side. Ferry to Kadıköy, market and lunch, Moda neighbourhood. Back via Üsküdar. Evening in Beyoğlu and Istiklal Avenue.

Day 4: Egyptian Spice Market and the Galata Tower area. A slower morning, a long lunch of mezze, and the Karaköy waterfront before departure.
