Book the performance before you book the flights. This sounds backwards but it is the right order: the show is the fixed point that everything else fits around, and you avoid the situation of being in Vienna on a Tuesday with no tickets and a sold-out opera house.

Timing: 4-6 Weeks Out

For West End theatre in London, Royal Opera House productions, and major classical concert series, four to six weeks is the sweet spot. Early enough that good seats are still available; close enough that you know the production has not been cancelled. For blockbuster productions or opening nights, go earlier. For smaller venues and mid-week performances, two weeks is often sufficient.

The exception is Vienna State Opera and the Musikverein, where standing room tickets are sold on the day. Planning around this is realistic and removes the need to book far in advance.

Same-Day and Last-Minute Options

TKTS in London's Leicester Square sells same-day and advance discounted tickets for West End shows at up to 50% off. The queue forms from 10am for afternoon shows and from late morning for evening performances. Not every show appears on the board: hits in long runs and productions with spare seats are the most common. It is reliable for finding something good; it is not reliable for finding a specific show.

For opera across Europe, last-minute availability through official venue websites is more common than it used to be. Vienna State Opera standing room tickets are €10 for Stehplatz positions, sold from 80 minutes before the performance. The queue forms well before that and moves reasonably quickly. Komische Oper in Berlin has a similar last-minute scheme. The Paris Opéra releases unsold seats online within a week of the performance at significant discounts.

The Matinée as a City Break Format

Matinée performances solve a specific city break problem. An evening show means organising dinner either too early or too late, and it anchors the end of the day. A matinée means the performance is done by 5pm, you have a full evening free, and the ticket is typically priced 20-30% lower than an equivalent evening seat. For a two or three day city break, one matinée and one evening performance is a very manageable structure.

What to Wear

The opera dress code question consumes more mental energy than it deserves. At most European opera houses, smart casual is correct: a jacket or dress, no trainers or shorts. Vienna and Milan on opening nights skew formal. Summer festival performances at outdoor venues are relaxed. When in doubt, err towards slightly overdressed rather than under.

Booking Sequence

Book the performance. Note the end time. Book dinner for one hour after the scheduled end. Book accommodation with easy access to the venue. Buy the flights last, confirming they are not red-eye arrivals that make the first evening unworkable.
