Griffith Observatory is genuinely excellent. It's free to enter. The views of LA are stunning. The hiking is good. The astronomy equipment is world-class. It's the single best free activity in Los Angeles, and almost nobody takes advantage of it because they're too busy looking at the Hollywood Sign from a parking lot.
Admission: Actually Free
Cost: $0. The Observatory is free to enter and explore.
Hours: Typically 12 PM-10 PM on weekdays, 10 AM-10 PM on weekends. Check ahead—they occasionally close for maintenance.
Parking: Free parking at the Observatory. Arrive early on weekends because the parking fills up and you'll end up a mile away.
What's Inside
The Planetarium Shows
The planetarium hosts shows about space, astronomy, and the universe. They're genuinely well-done and not condescending to adults.
Cost: $7-15 depending on the show.
Duration: About 30-45 minutes.
Best for: People interested in astronomy. Kids. First dates (it's dark, it's cool, you learn something).
Shows book up, especially on weekends. Buy tickets online before you go.
The Telescopes
The Observatory has public telescopes on the balcony level. On clear nights, you can look at Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and various star clusters.
Cost: Free. First-come, first-served.
How it works: You line up, look through a telescope for maybe 60 seconds, move on. Simple but genuinely cool.
Best nights: Clear skies with no fog. Los Angeles fog can block everything.
The Hiking
Griffith Park is enormous (4,210 acres), and there are tons of trails. The Observatory is the central point.
Easy Walks
Observatory Loop Trail (about 1 mile, flat): Walks around the Observatory grounds. Good for people who want to stretch their legs without actual hiking.
Ferndell Trail (2 miles, easy): Shaded walk through a fern gully. Actually beautiful and different from the rest of LA.
Moderate Hikes
Mount Hollywood Trail (3 miles, moderate): You can see the whole city from the top, and it actually works. The views are genuinely worth it.
Mount Lee Trail (2.6 miles one-way, moderate): The trail that gets you closer to the Hollywood Sign. Steep in sections.
Serious Hikes
Griffith Peak (7 miles round-trip, hard): All-day hike with excellent views and actual solitude.
The hiking in Griffith Park is genuinely good. LA hikes have a reputation for being boring and surrounded by city. Griffith Park actually feels like wilderness in places.
Photography
Best time: Sunrise or sunset. The city looks incredible from up here.
Best spot for photos: Observatory building is iconic. The Observatory facade with the city in the background is the classic shot.
Night photography: The Observatory lights at night with the city glowing behind it is excellent.
Stargazing Tips
Best nights: The darker the night sky, the better. Check the moon phase. New moon (no moon visible) is best. Full moon washes out fainter stars.
Best seasons: Winter (December-February) has clearer skies and fewer tourists. Summer has more fog.
Avoid summer weekends: The parking fills up by 6 PM. Arrive before 5 PM or go on a weekday.
Bring a flashlight with a red filter: It preserves night vision and is less jarring than regular light. Buy one or use your phone's red light app.
How Long to Spend
Quick visit (1 hour): Walk around outside, see the building, take a photo, leave.
Half day (3-4 hours): See the Observatory, do an easy hike, get coffee.
Full day (6+ hours): See the Observatory, do a good hike, maybe watch a planetarium show, stay for sunset.
Getting There
Driving: Take the 101 north to Los Feliz Boulevard. Drive up to the Observatory parking lot. Free parking.
Public transit: Red Line to Hollywood/Highland, then bus 180 or 181 to the Observatory. Takes 45 minutes total. Not ideal.
Rideshare: Uber to Griffith Observatory will cost $15-30 depending on where you're coming from.
What You Should Know
The Observatory is in Griffith Park, which is beautiful but occasionally has homeless encampments. Stay on trails. Avoid wandering into hidden areas. The Observatory area itself is safe during the day, sketchy late at night (past 10 PM).
The city views from here are actually better than from the Hollywood Sign viewpoint. More expansive, more obviously LA.
