April is one of the better months to visit Edinburgh, particularly if you want to avoid the August Festival madness and still get some decent daylight hours. The city is not warm by any standard, but it is vivid: the castle looks excellent against grey skies, the hills are green, and the Old Town has enough foot traffic to feel alive without being unmanageable.

Weather

April in Edinburgh averages 7C at night and 12C during the day. It can be colder on the hills and near the coast. Rain and wind are standard. The odd warm sunny day appears, and when it does, Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park fill up. Pack a proper waterproof and keep warm layers to hand. Do not underestimate Scottish spring.

Crowds and Prices

Edinburgh is quietest in January and February, picks up from March, and April sees a noticeable increase. The Old Town and Royal Mile are busy at weekends, but manageable compared to summer. Easter brings a short wave of domestic UK visitors. Hotel prices are mid-range in April: higher than winter, well below the August Festival peak. Book Edinburgh Castle tickets in advance; the queue without one is long even in spring.

What's On

The Edinburgh Science Festival runs in early April and is one of the best of its kind in the UK: accessible, wide-ranging, and spread across multiple venues. The Beltane Fire Festival on Calton Hill traditionally takes place on 30 April (Walpurgis Night), and it is a dramatic and unexpected event for a city break. Easter weekend brings some events to Princes Street Gardens.

One Thing to Watch

April wind on Arthur's Seat or the Pentland Hills is not to be underestimated. People arrive in spring jackets and get caught out. If you are planning a walk up Arthur's Seat, which is worth doing, bring a windproof layer and decent footwear. The summit path is steep and rocky. It is not technical, but it deserves respect.
