Dubrovnik in February: What to Expect

Dubrovnik in February is the complete inverse of summer. Where July and August pack the Old Town to uncomfortable levels, February leaves the stone streets to a handful of visitors and local residents. The Old Town walls are walkable without queuing and without being swept along by a current of cruise-ship passengers. Prices are a fraction of peak season. The honest trade-off is that the city is noticeably quieter commercially: some restaurants and shops close for winter, and the beach and island options are unavailable.

Weather

February averages 8C to 12C in Dubrovnik, which is mild by northern European standards. Rain is relatively common. The Bura wind, a cold dry wind from the mountains, can sweep through and make the exposed city walls and coastal paths noticeably cold. A windproof mid-weight jacket is more useful than a heavy winter coat. Sun is possible and the light on the Old Town stone is excellent when it appears.

Crowds and Prices

Genuinely low season. Flights and accommodation are substantially cheaper than June through September. The Old Town is quiet enough that you can walk the walls, visit the Rector's Palace, and eat at a restaurant without any planning around crowds. This is what Dubrovnik residents prefer all year, and in February you briefly get to experience it.

What's On

The Dubrovnik Winter Festival runs through part of January and February, with events, performances, and food markets in the Old Town. Carnival events take place in the pre-Lenten period. Beyond organised events, the appeal is simply experiencing one of Europe's most beautiful towns without the summer scrum.

One Thing to Watch

Restaurant choice narrows noticeably in February. A portion of Old Town restaurants close for winter or operate reduced hours. The restaurants that stay open are generally the locally-oriented ones, which is not a bad outcome, but if you have a specific place in mind, check it is open before planning your evening around it.
